Young Scientist Workshop 2017 and organisation meeting 2017

Report Young Scientists Workshop 2017 - Writing and interdisciplinary cooperation must be learned

The Young Scientists Workshop 2017 of the National Research Platform for Zoonoses took place from 9-11 October 2017 on the premises of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), Berlin-Jungfernheide. With two parallel sessions: "Scientific Writing" and "Introduction to interdisciplinary communication, presentation and collaboration", the contents of the workshop were tailored to the needs of young scientists in zoonoses research.

In addition to the professional events for young scientists, the repertoire of the Zoonoses Platform's promotion of the Young Scientists Workshop offers young scientists from the field of zoonoses research the opportunity to develop and expand their interdisciplinary competences. In 2018, 26 young scientists took advantage of this offer.
The session "Scientific Writing" provided the participants with basic information on the preparation, structure and development of a scientific concept and the use of adequate formulations. Furthermore, the participants dealt with optimisation strategies with regard to correct literature research. The professional background of the trainer as a scientific writer ensured that the exercise texts used were highly topical and of great relevance to the participants.

Zoonoses research is characterized by the overlap of many disciplines and numerous interdisciplinary research projects. Therefore, the session "Introduction to interdisciplinary communication, presentation and collaboration" gave the participants a first insight into the complex subject areas of interdisciplinary cooperation. The individual aspects (communication, presentation and collaboration) were introduced and practiced in a combination of theoretical lectures and subsequent practical exercises by two specially trained trainers. The practical exercises were based on the participants' own individual scientific lectures.

Joint dinners, which offered plenty of room for networking, rounded off the event. At this point we would like to take the opportunity to thank those responsible at BfR for their courteous and very pleasant cooperation.

Follow-up report on the 2017 organisational meeting

Directly following the workshop for young scientists, this year's organizational meeting of the young scientists* of the Zoonoses Platform took place on October 11, 2017 at the BfR, Berlin-Jungfernheide. During the meeting, organizational and content-related questions regarding upcoming events for young scientists, such as the Junior Scientist Zoonoses Meeting 2018, were discussed and debated. The input and collection of suggestions and ideas was extremely productive and fruitful. As a proposal for 2018, the organisation of the Junior Scientist Zoonoses Meeting was initiated decoupled from the symposium as a "Spring School".
